At a pivotal moment in Fifty Shades Darker, the sequel to 2015’s Fifty Shades of Grey, Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) and Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) are at Christian’s parents’ house for his birthday party when they begin an intense conversation about their relationship. Not to be overheard, the pair retires to Christian’s childhood bedroom to have their Serious Talk, but unfortunately their conversation is out-shined by a peculiar set decoration: A poster for the 2004 Vin Diesel sci-fi flick, The Chronicles of Riddick.
SEE IT? (Photo: Doane Gregory, Universal Pictures)
The poster has already caught the attention of many on the Internet for the sheer weirdness of its placement and (probably unintentional) prominence in a BDSM romance. Despite multiple sex scenes and a lot of nudity in the film, the poster for a poorly reviewed Vin Diesel vehicle is all some people can talk about.
Wondering if there’s a reason behind the choice in wall art? There is.
One Fox 5 reporter had the presence of mind to actually ask Dornan about it. He said it was something the art department thought was fun and since Riddick was a Universal movie like Darker, it made it easy to just tack up on the wall without any pesky rights issues. Dornan also noted there’s a UFC poster in the room, too.
“(Director James Foley) wanted Christian to come across as a bit tougher and more imposing, and to show that he could handle himself and be a bit rough. So the idea that maybe he was into ultimate fighting made sense to him,” Dornan said.
Synergy at its finest.
