SAN FRANCISCO — Several major phone and internet companies experienced widespread outages Monday.
AT&T, Sprint and Verizon all showed large outage areas on the East coast and in California, according to Downdetector, a Dutch company that tracks outages.
North Carolina appeared to be especially hard hit.
“This typically indicates either a problem with a backbone provider or providers sharing infrastructure, which is more common in lightly populated areas — you don’t typically see it in urban areas,” said Tom Sanders with Downdetector.
Calls for comment to AT&T, Sprint and Verizon were not immediately returned.
