MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. — JibJab has a new way for you to improve your Snapchat and Instagram storytelling, letting you add your animated face and stickers to your “Story” collection of photos and videos.
The app, JibJab Camera, “helps people make their photos and videos funnier,” Gregg Spiridellis, co-founder of JibJab, says on our #TalkingTech podcast interview. (Click the link below to listen.)
JibJab, long available for e-cards that animate your face to familiar songs, or on message stickers, brings those features to the Camera app, The app launched with a promo campaign from the National Football League that lets you create stickers and avatars from your favorite teams.
While the app is aimed at creating stories for Instagram and Snapchat, Spiridellis says media made on the app can be saved to the phone or shared to other social networks such as Facebook.
The idea of Stories —visual collections that last 24 hours before disappearing — originated with Snapchat and was copied by Facebook, which now offers it with Facebook Messenger, and the Instagram and WhatsApp Messenger apps.
Instagram boasts 250 million Stories created daily, by far the most popular of the four.
Spiridellis says Stories have caught on because “it’s a great way for people to express themselves beyond 140 text characters in a way that’s fun. It’s here and gone. It won’t be thrown back at you five years from now,” as some people worry about their social posts coming back to haunt them.
Meanwhile, JibJab was a featured player when Apple brought stickers to iMessages in the iOS10 mobile operating system update last fall. Spiridellis had high hopes for what this would mean to his company, but admits he was disappointed because of issues with downloading his app within iMessages. “It was too difficult to install,” he says.
For the new iOS, version 11 due Tuesday, “It’s much easier, just two taps, and the apps will now be visible at the bottom of every conversation,” he says.
